Measurement Tool

Validate Dimensions Before You Print

The built-in measurement tool lets you take point-to-point distances directly on 3D models in your browser. Verify fitment, check clearances, and validate dimensions without downloading files or opening CAD software.

How to Measure

Step 1

Open the Model Viewer

Navigate to any part page and click "View Model" to launch the 3D viewer
Step 2

Click the Measure Icon

Find the ruler icon in the viewer toolbar to activate measurement mode
Step 3

Click Two Points on the Model

Click any surface point, then click a second point to see the distance
Step 4

View or Clear Measurements

Distances display in millimeters. Click the trash icon to remove measurements

Features

  • Point-to-point distance measurement on any visible surface
  • Measurements displayed in millimeters for precision
  • Up to 3 simultaneous measurements on screen
  • Works on STL, PLY, and OBJ file formats
  • Visual line indicators connecting measurement points
  • One-click clear to remove all measurements

Access

Free for Everyone

Measurement is available on all parts in the library. No sign-in required.

Tips for Accurate Measurements

  • Zoom in close before placing points for better accuracy
  • Rotate the model to access hard-to-reach surfaces
  • Place points on flat surfaces rather than curved edges when possible
  • Use wireframe mode to see underlying geometry more clearly
  • Compare measurements against known dimensions to validate accuracy

Frequently Asked Questions

Measurements are based on the actual mesh geometry uploaded by the creator. Accuracy depends on the model's resolution and where you place measurement points. For most well-made models, expect accuracy within 0.5mm on flat surfaces.

This limit keeps the viewer uncluttered and performant. Clear existing measurements to add new ones. Most validation workflows need only 2-3 key dimensions.

Currently measurements are for on-screen reference only. For documentation, take a screenshot with measurements visible.

Measurement works on STL, PLY, and OBJ files displayed in the viewer. STEP and 3MF files can be downloaded but don't support in-browser measurement.

Troubleshooting

Can't click on the model surface

Make sure measurement mode is active (ruler icon highlighted). Try zooming in closer - very small parts may need magnification for precise clicking.

Measurement seems inaccurate

Verify you're clicking on the intended surface. Curved or angled surfaces can be misleading. Try rotating the model to confirm point placement.

Measurement mode keeps deactivating

Measurement mode stays active until you click the ruler icon again or switch tools. If it's not working, refresh the page and try again.

Can't see the measurement line

Measurement lines may blend into certain model colors. Try rotating the model or switching to wireframe mode for better visibility.
